Obituary for Dr. Anne Godley St. Goar

Anne (Godley) St. Goar ( June 30, 1922 - July 23, 2014) of Brookline, MA. It is with great sadness that we announce the death of loving, vibrant, gracious and much-adored Nan, 92, mother to Anne F. St. Goar of Cambridge and her husband, Shippen Page; Elizabeth St. Goar, of Davis, California; Jinny St. Goar of New York City and her husband, Joe Donovan; Frederick St. Goar of Atherton, California and his wife, Carla Cassani. Nan was grandmother to Nicholas Page and his wife, Paola Ochoa-Page, Emlen Page and Anderson Page; Pascal Donovan and Gabriel Donovan; Teresa St. Goar, Luca St. Goar and Juliana St. Goar. She was great-grandmother to Lewis Starling Page, and an attentive aunt and great-aunt to a myriad of nieces and nephews. Walter St. Goar, her husband of 53 years who predeceased her, frequently said: “to know her is to love her.” Nan was the daughter of Frederick and Anne Franchot Godley, of Rye, NY. An internist, Nan graduated from Vassar College in 1944, was among the first women to attend Yale Medical School in the 1940s, and did her internship and residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital where she met her husband, Walter, who was also a physician. She served for many years as a staff physician at the Bunker Hill Health Center, starting in the 1970’s during the busing crisis. Nan was an accomplished gardener and athlete, who contributed much to many community organizations. She will be sorely missed. A memorial service will be planned for late September at The First Church of Chestnut Hill. Contributions in her honor may be made to the following organizations that were dear to Nan’s heart: The New England Wild Flower Society (http://www.newenglandwild.org) and its Garden in the Woods in Framingham, MA; The Women’s Lunch Place (http://womenslunchplace.org) in Boston, MA; or Hall’s Pond Sanctuary in Brookline, MA (http://www.brooklinema.gov/1051/Halls-Pond-Sanctuary)
