Obituary for Ethel C. Wurtz (Dore)

Wurtz, Ethel C. Dore, 94

Born in England on June 10, 1921, to Lily Helena and James Herbert Doré, she died on April 19, 2016, in Arlington, Massachusetts following a heart attack.

Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, brother Norman, son Mark, and Ken, her husband of 65 years. She is survived by son Dana and his wife Nancy, daughter Lesley and her husband Tom, grandchildren Maeve and Liam, and several nieces and nephews.

Her career began in England during WWII, working for the National Fire Service and Dunlop Rubber Company. In the U.S., she worked at the Town Clerk’s office in Harwich and retired as Head Accounting Clerk after 20 years of service. She also spent many years working and volunteering at Chase Library in West Harwich. She was known by her friends in the British American Club as Dee.

During her lifetime, Ethel was an enthusiastic traveler and visited and lived throughout the world, from Europe to China, and many places in the United States. She settled with her family in South Dennis, where she lived for 45 years. She enjoyed meeting new people, cherished old friends, and was devoted to her family. A woman of many interests, she was an avid reader, knitter, and produced elegant cross-stitch. She was passionate about animals, especially cats, and was the quintessential chocoholic.

Ethel came to this country at age 27 on an adventure and relocated here, but always maintained dual citizenship with the US and the UK, never forgetting her British roots and love for her heritage.

She will be forever missed. Visitation on Saturday, April 23, 2016, at Keefe Funeral Home in Arlington, MA, at 9-11am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to an animal charity of your choice.
