Obituary for William J. Maytum

William J. Maytum
William (Bill) J. Maytum, arguably the best dad ever, passed away peacefully on Tues, July 19th, after a long and rewarding life. Born in Dorchester, MA in 1926, Dad spent the better part of his childhood growing up on Norfolk Street in Cambridge with his parents and his three devoted sisters who adored their “brother Billy”.

After graduating from Cambridge Latin in 1944 at age 18, he enlisted in the US Army and was assigned to the 912th Peiping Unit, serving bravely in China, India, and Burma (now Myanmar) during the latter half of WWII. After an Honorable Discharge in July of 1946, he returned to Cambridge, and was accepted to Harvard University where he majored in International Business, played varsity basketball , and graduated in 1951. In the summer of that year, he accepted an interim job as a bank teller at the Provident Institution for Savings in Boston while figuring out his next steps. That interim job ended 42 years later when he retired as Vice President of that same Institution. Early in his time at the Provident, he was forced to deal with a colleague’s strong-willed and beautiful secretary from South Boston, who seemed to know exactly what was best for him. They were, of course, married in June, 1956. Bill and Claire lived briefly in Hyde Park before moving to Arlington MA, where they spent the next 60 or so years raising their family, becoming immersed in local, state and national political dramas, and working incrementally to make their piece of the world a better place. Dad was a longtime Arlington Town meeting member, and was active on many non-profit boards and civic committees. After retiring, he spent several years researching the Maytum family genealogy; documenting our family celebrities, publishing the Maytum newsletter which was distributed to Maytums around the world, and being the best Grandfather (PA) ever.

He was a quiet, thoughtful and generous man who will be missed by all who came to know him. His greatest legacy, however, was the wisdom, humor(dry), and humility and love he imparted to his entire family.

He was the beloved husband of the late Claire(Hunt) Maytum, devoted son of the late Daniel and Elizabeth (Mason) Maytum. Loving father of Jack and Donna Maytum of Newport, RI, Betsy and Bob Matson of Arlington, Ginny and Paul Briskie of Acton, MA, Dan Maytum and Stacey (Houghton) of Groveland, MA, and Mary and Wayne Ritter of Billerica, MA. Also survived by his grandchildren Claire (Maytum) Remillard and her husband Ernie Remillard, Sam Matson, Dan Matson, Jack Briskie, Katie Briskie, Michael Ritter, and the late Robert W. Matson. Great grandfather of Eleanor Willa Remillard. Dearest brother of Catherine Maytum of Arlington, Mary Galgay of Dennis and the late Agnes Maytum. Brother in Law of Albert Salzillo and his late wife Josephine (Hunt) Salzillo. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. We are all grateful for the time he spent with us.

Visiting Hours will be held from the Keefe Funeral Home, 5 Chestnut St., Rt. 60 (adjacent to St. Agnes Church) ARLINGTON on Thursday from 4-7pm. A Prayer Service and Military Honors will immediately follow at 7pm. Relatives and friends are invited. A Funeral Mass and Burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in dad’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice. For a complete obituary, directions, or to send a condolence visit www.keefefuneralhome.com
