GAVRELIS, Mary M. (Ohanian), 90, of Medford. Passed away peacefully on January 12, 2017, surrounded by her loving family. Wife of 63 years to Nicholas E. Gavrelis of Medford. Mother of Wendy Anderson and her husband Peter of Medford, and Naida Gavrelis of Arlington. ‘Grandma’ of Jennifer and Matt Anderson of Medford. Daughter of the late Cyrus and Marjorie (Asoian) Ohanian of Watertown. Sister of Helen Ohanian, Robert Ohanian and his wife Tanya, Ronald Ohanian and Diane Devlin, and the late Charles Ohanian and Beverly Ohanian. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
After graduating from Simmons College, she worked several years at Tufts University. She then devoted her life to raising and caring for her family. She was very active in the community, as a member of the Plan E Civic Association and an advocate for the Medford Public Schools. She enjoyed time with her family, needlework, politics, and watching baseball, football, and tennis. She was an avid learner, and everyone sought and valued her thoughts and opinions.
Visiting hours will be held Monday, January 16, from 4 to 8 PM at the Keefe Funeral Home, 5 Chestnut St., Rt. 60 (adjacent to St. Agnes Church) ARLINGTON. Funeral service to be held at Grace Episcopal Church, 160 High St., Medford, on Tuesday at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Services will conclude with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford. Mary’s family would like to personally thank the staff during her brief illness at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Medford, for all their care and support. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s memory may be made to Grace Episcopal Church, Medford, or the charity of your choice.
