Obituary for Bernice Katz Jones

Bernice Katz Jones of Arlington died peacefully on April 21, 2017, in the care of her husband Victor. Bernice was born in December 1932, the daughter of Max and Sarah Bennett Katz. Bernice grew up in Dorchester, attended Jeremiah E. Burke High School and Boston University and became immersed in the vibrant cultural scene of Cambridge the 1950s, where she met her husband Victor. Their shared passions included folk dancing, Gilbert and Sullivan operettas and world travel. After settling in Arlington in 1962, they raised three sons. Starting with her involvement in the League of Women Voters, Bernice was engaged in many aspects of local and state politics, focusing on public land access and parks development. She was a long-time town meeting member and served as board member or chair of the Arlington Park and Recreation Committee for 27 years. Her group was instrumental in creating the first master plan for town recreational facilities that led to the development of landmark parks at Robbins Farm, Reeds Brook, Spy Pond and the Reservoir. Her wide-ranging interests included work experiences at the consultancy Arthur D. Little and later as a realtor. Her fierce intellect and commitment to family and community will be greatly missed by her husband Victor, sons Jonathan, Daniel and Joshua, daughters-in-law Kim and Amanda and grandchildren Colin, Ian, Simone and Hazel. A remembrance of her remarkable life will be held in coming months, with friends welcome to contact the family.
