WOBURN - Dorothy T. (Culleton) Murray passed away surrounded by the love of her family on July 26, 2017 at the Sawtelle Family Hospice House in Reading. She was 90 years old.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 66 years, William F. Murray Jr. Loving mother of Mary Ellen Canty and her husband Kevin G. of Billerica, Carol A. Strachan and her late husband Donald C. of Billerica, William F. Murray III and his companion Jean M. Sullivan, James R. Murray and his fiancé Maricel Sanchez, and Christine M. Chute and her husband James L. all of Woburn. Beloved Nana to fifteen grandchildren: Erin (Kelley), Patrick, and Katelyn (Olson) Canty; Rachel, Emily (Wheeler) and Donald Strachan; Jennifer, Heather, William IV, Michael, Kathryn, and Elizabeth Murray; James Murray; Kyle and Cameron Chute. She was also the proud Great Nana to Julius, Sebastian, Noelle and Ellah.
Born in Boston, Dorothy was the daughter of the late Wilfred and Dorothy (Manning) Culleton. She was the oldest of eight children. Devoted sister of Margaret, and the late Simon Monchick of FL, Edward Culleton of West Roxbury, Francis Culleton and his wife Barbara of Franklin, Alice Pedneault of Chelmsford, and the late Mary and Earl Manifase, Barbara and Edward Goscinak, and Patricia and Joseph Pagliuca.
She was a graduate of St. Joseph’s High School. During World War II Dorothy became a Cadet Nurse and attended St. Margaret’s School of Nursing. She began a lifelong career as a Registered Nurse and retired from the City of Cambridge in 1992 having worked at Cambridge City Hospital and Neville Manor.
In 1947 Mrs. Murray met her beloved husband Bill, married in May, of 1951, and the rest is history. Dorothy had a strong work ethic as well as a devotion for her family. She traveled the world with her husband Bill including trips to the British Isles, Europe, Greece, Turkey, Newfoundland and Canada. Family vacations were spent in Dennisport on Cape Cod and Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire. In their retirement years, they spent winters in Florida.
A woman of faith, Dorothy was an active member of St. Barbara’s parish and kept many in her daily prayers. She was a strong and courageous eighteen year survivor of breast cancer.
She enjoyed knitting, making many afghans and sweaters for all of her grandchildren. Dot and Bill have been avid fans of Boston College football and hockey, holding season tickets for several decades.
Never forgetting a birthday or special occasion, she will be remembered for the thoughtful, kind, generous way she lived her life. Dorothy will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
Funeral will be held from the Keefe Funeral Home, 5 Chestnut St. (adjacent to St. Agnes Church, Rt. 60) ARLINGTON, Monday at 9 am. Funeral mass celebrated in St. Barbara’s Church, Cambridge Rd., Woburn at 10 am. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours Sunday 4-8 pm. Services will conclude with burial at Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Sawtelle Family Hospice House, 320 Haverhill St., Reading, MA 01867.
