George Harold Murphy of North Cambridge entered into eternal rest on January 11th, 2018. Former husband of Linda (DiMatteo), father of Matthew G. and Benjamin C. Brother of Charles R. Murphy and Lorraine A. Touchette and the late Mary Lou McGrath of Cambridge.

George was an avid reader and a walker, on any day he could be found at Castle Island. As a lifelong birder with a special interest in raptors; he was considered to be a Subject Matter Expert regarding the Quabbin Reservoir and the Swift River Valley.

For the last fifty years of his life George was involved in the labor movement, where he was an ardent champion of employee rights and equal opportunity.

He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, and the Seafarers International Union.

George was proud to hold the rare status as a Golden Shellback, having crossed the Equator at the 180th meridian (International Date Line) off the coast of West Africa on April 4,1963.
