Obituary for Alice Minchello (Melanson)

Alice Minchello. of Waltham, formerly of Cambridge, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2022 surrounded by her family. She was the daughter of the late Olivier and Loretta Melanson. Sister of Paul Melanson and wife Lucky of Waltham and the late Doris Fantini. She was the mother of the late Stephen Minchello, Elaine Minchello of Waltham, and David Minchello and his wife Lynn of Arlington. Alice (Memere), is blessed to have 3 grandchildren – Olivia Minchello of Lowell, and Emily and Sophie Minchello of Arlington. Also survived by loving nieces and nephews.

Alice was born in Arlington, MA and raised in the North Cambridge French Canadian community. She attended Notre dame de Pitie school and Church. She raised her 3 children in Cambridge and was an active parent at St. Peter’s School and Matignon High School where she could be found driving the nuns to the grocery store, and participating in PTO. For many years she was a leader in the Girl Scout program passing on her love of crafting and needlework to her troop. From Camping trips to taking a bus of girls on a trip to Washington and Florida, she organized meetings, ceremonies, parade appearances and fundraising. As her children got into high school, she shifted her energy to high school bingo nights and driving kids to hockey games. Through these years she made many lifelong friends.

Alice became a Medical Secretary at Cambridge Urological (Mount Auburn) where she worked for many years while spending time traveling with her children. She visited England, Scandinavia, Germany, Australia, Hong Kong, Italy, Tahiti, Alaska, and Bermuda to name a few. She was the “driver” for many road trips on the East coast.

Alice’s traveling slowed as her focus moved to becoming the ideal Memere to her 3 grandchildren. “Memere” was always there to support her grandchildren, from the early dance recital days, softball games, to military ceremonies, and the many, many musical performances. “Memere” shared her love of holidays and celebration with her granddaughters, always making an event of whatever was going on with a houseful of decorations and goodies –Easter Brunch with egg hunts, Halloween “giant spider” parties, Thanksgiving feasts and Christmas fun with presents and scavenger hunts.

Relatives and friends are invited to visiting hours at the Keefe Funeral Home, 5 Chestnut ST., ARLINGTON on Thursday from 4-7 pm. A funeral mass will be held on Friday at Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted, Trapelo Road, Waltham on Friday at 11 am. Burial in Cambridge Catholic Cemetery, in Cambridge.
