Obituary for Barbara E. Travers (Cotter)

Barbara (Cotter) Travers of Arlington peacefully entered into eternal rest at the age of 92 on Wednesday, June 14.
Barbara was born in Jamaica Plain, MA to her devoted parents, Margaret (Twohig) and James Cotter.
She is predeceased by her husband of 55 years and love of her life, John Travers, her beloved daughter Elizabeth Eagan, and her twin sister, Marjorie Tack.
Barbara is survived by her daughters Ellen and husband Kevin Roche of Arlington and Jane Travers of Arlington, and her son John and wife Janice of Lynn and son in law Robert Eagan of Arlington. Barbara was a devoted and loving “Gammy” to her grandchildren, Jacqueline Eagan Burke and husband Paul, Madeline Eagan Davies and husband Chris, Gina Travers White and husband Evan, Joseph Travers, Zachary Roche and wife Samantha, Lindsey Roche Taylor and husband Jack, and Nicholas Roche. She is also survived by six wonderful great grandchildren.
Barbara worked as a School Librarian at Brackett School in Arlington for many years. She touched the lives of thousands of young people through her kindness, empathy, and constant positivity. Her love of children’s literature led her to receive a Master's Degree from Boston College, and partner with her husband on numerous writing projects, including a book on children’s literature. Her passion for learning and education led Barbara to also teach Adult Education literacy courses.
Barbara was a loyal member of the Arlington Catholic Women’s Club. Devoted to the Risen Christ and a person of deep faith, Barbara was known to place rosaries in several drawers around the house. She loved gardening, the sun, sewing, reading, her Irish heritage, the arts and music, but most of all, she cherished the company of her family. She will be missed by so many.
Visiting hours will be held at Keefe Funeral Home, 5 Chestnut Street, Arlington MA on Tuesday, June 20 from 4 to 7 PM. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Agnes Church, 32 Medford Street, Arlington MA on Wednesday, June 21 at 10:00 AM. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations in Barbara’s memory be made to Catholic Charities or a charity of your choice. The family would especially like to acknowledge and thank Brightview Senior Living for providing Barbara with so much love and care during the past three years.
