BROWN, Charity Anne Deputy Press Secretary to Boston Mayor, Landscape Designer, Devoted Wife and Mother Longtime resident of Cambridge, MA, and Jaffrey, NH, Charity Anne Brown died unexpectedly in her home in Cambridge on January 28. Beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend, Charity grew up in Pittsford, NY, daughter of Wallace E. Brown, Jr. and Anne McCollough Brown. She graduated from the Columbia School in Rochester, Bradford Jr. College and Boston University. Throughout her career in communications and media relations, she served as deputy press secretary to Mayor Kevin White, coordinated communications and marketing projects at the Mass Port Authority, contributed to Boston Magazine, and worked as a deputy to Lt. Governor Tom O'Neill. She oversaw the marketing program for the Friends of Post Office Square in downtown Boston, which blended two of Charity's strongest talents, her well-honed communications skills, and her ability to develop inviting and vibrant landscape designs. During her early years in Boston, Charity forged many deep and lasting relationships, especially with her roommates of that time who remained close friends until the end. Charity married Robert Banker in 1982 and moved to Beacon Street where their sons David and Jona were born and later moved to Cambridge, MA. Charity was happiest when she was knee-deep in soil, pruning plants or relocating delicate flowers and bushes in her garden. Investing in her local communities, Charity cultivated connections with other prodigious gardeners, designers, and landscapers and was involved in the Monadnock Garden Club and the Arnold Arboretum. Her enthusiastic support extended to local shopkeepers, artists and artisans whose work she admired, and to many civic and cultural organizations. Charity's sense of style and artistry were her hallmarks. Effortlessly expressed, her personal style was both elegant and understated. She had an uncanny ability to spot a hidden treasure. Whether the item was a new addition to her eclectic wardrobe, an unusual fabric, or piece of art that she simply could not live without, Charity was able to integrate it into her world with dazzling results. Her artistic talents extended to furniture restoration and floral designs. She could give new life to a forlorn table with several cans of paint and a few delicate brushes. Often she would create floral arrangements for friends, and the results were stunning. Charity has left a legacy of beauty in so many of the endeavors she pursued. She is survived by her sons David (wife Sarah) and Jonathan, stepsons Adam (wife Joanne) and Timothy (wife Anne), brother-in-law James Banker (wife Michele) and sisters Abigail VanDeventer and Trude B. Fitelson, and grandchildren. She was predeceased by husband Robert Banker, stepdaughter Lisel Banker, and sister Nancy Pieper. A Memorial Service will be planned for the summer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Charity's honor to the Arnold Arboretum arboretum.harvard.edu or the Monadnock Conservancy MonadnockConservancy.org
