RATHBONE, Charles H. Born on December 12, 1935, in New York City and raised in Kent, Connecticut, and Harthaven on Martha's Vineyard. He attended the Dublin School, Groton School, Yale (BA and MAT), Harvard (Ed.D) and Northeastern (JD). Charlie's passion was education and learning. After completing his dissertation on the Open Education movement, he taught high school English in Evanston, Illinois, and North Haven, Connecticut; he taught elementary school in Oberlin, Ohio, and was the head of the New City School in St. Louis. He was a professor of Education at Oberlin College, Wheaton College (MA) and Lesley University. Supervising student teachers in the field was what he loved most. His years as an educator led him to law school to study the intersection of law and education. In addition to his teaching, he contributed many years of service to the boards of Fayerweather Street School, the Cambridge Center for Adult Education and Primary Source. His involvement with Fayerweather Street School, through having two sons attend, also included researching and writing the school's history on its 40th anniversary. Charlie descended from artists and his art was writing. He was a poet, a memorialist and wrote extensively about his ancestors. Charlie never stopped learning. Introduced to hawks while at Dublin School, he was a lifelong birder. He was an avid traveler and reader, often combining the two hobbies by reading about a destination's history and culture prior to taking the trip. He enjoyed belonging to two book groups. Charlie passed away on May 10, at home in Cambridge, the city in which he had lived since 1974. Charlie leaves his wife of 31 years, Edith (Taylor); his sons, Nicholas Charles (Cynthia) of Brunswick, Maine, and Owen Fraser of Washington, DC; grandsons, Nathaniel Augustus and Maxwell Storm of Brunswick, Maine; and his brother, Allan McDowell (Melissa Keeler), of Vineyard Haven. He also leaves an extended family of cherished in-laws. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Massachusetts Audubon. There will be a Memorial Service on July 15 at 11 am at the Concord Museum in Concord.
