Obituary for Fekerte Legesse (Gebre)

Fekerte Legesse was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on September 28,1948, to her parents Woizero Tsege Taddesse and Ato Legesse Gebre. She grew up in a large family surround by her many siblings and relatives.

She started her schooling in Addis Ababa, first attending Nazerth school and then Etigue Menen school. Following her graduation, she started working as a ground hostess for Egypt Air in Addis Ababa. Shortly thereafter, she left Ethiopia for the United States.

After having lived in California and New York, she settled in the greater Boston area where she lived for over 50 years until her final day. Fifi, as she was fondly called, was adored by people of all ages and of all walks of life. A brightly painted wall mural can be found at the heart of Central Square in Cambridge as a visual reminder of the community of friends she built with her vibrant personality.

While the painting captures her radiant smile and beautiful face, it is Fifi’s loving spirit and infinite kindness that will forever be carved in our hearts. Fifi will be remembered for her love of life, laughter and limitless generosity. The enduring support she so willingly gave to those around her will never be forgotten.

Fifi’s faith and trust in her Lord was unwavering. Each and every day she praised and thanked her Savior in daily prayer and believed it is all in His hands. She would always say “Give it to God”. And in her prayer room, she took her final breath while praying before her Savior’s alter.

Fifi passed away on the 17th of August 2023, at the age of 74. Her legacy will continue with her two daughters, Mulu and Seble, and her two grandchildren, Sydney and Jordan. She will also be missed by her sisters, her nieces, nephews and those with whom she built deeply loving and lifelong friendships.

On August 26, 2023, Fifi will be laid to rest at Cambridge Cemetery surrounded by her family and friends. May her heavenly Father grant eternal rest and keep her in His Hands.
On behalf of the family, we are truly grateful for all from near and far who are sharing in our sorrow and giving unfettered support.
