Obituary for George Heuchert

“All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts ….” (William Shakespeare, As You Like It)

George Heuchert played many parts and had many exits and entrances. He made his final exit when he died peacefully in his sleep in Cambridge, MA on October 15, 2022. For much of George’s 79 years, he was involved in theater, education, and sports. After graduating from his beloved Penn State with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology (and later a Master’s degree in English), George started his teaching career at Farragut High School in Knoxville, TN in 1968. There he enjoyed teaching English, Theater, and directing many plays for 24 years. He continued teaching in other capacities for several years after that while also pursuing his other passions - being an actor in numerous plays, and directing scores of plays and musical theater productions, particularly at the Oak Ridge Community Theater and the Oak Ridge Junior Playhouse. He also performed in, or directed, plays at the Tennessee Valley Players, University of Tennessee Theater, and the Westside Dinner Theater. George’s other main interests were sports (he loved playing tennis and baseball, watching football and any Penn State sport), and his dogs. He almost always had at least one St. Bernard named Lenny, and another pup as well. He went to great lengths to ensure that his dogs were happy - even going as far as removing the passenger seat of his VW so that his canine copilot could have a good view. Not a man for small talk, George had a penchant for getting into deep conversations about American literature and the general state of the world. He was always a teacher at heart.

George grew up in Philadelphia, PA but lived in Farragut, TN for more than 50 years, awed by the beauty of the Smoky Mountains. He moved to Meadville, PA, and then to Cambridge, MA, a couple of years ago to be closer to family. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Eleanor, his older brother, John, and sister Jane. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Amy Heuchert, his three nieces (Nancy, Beth, and Jenny) and their families, and long-standing friends and colleagues.

Through acting George was able to live many lives in one lifetime - and we who were touched by his characters, his direction, his teaching, his friendship, and his sense of humor will remember him as an authentic human being. He will be missed.

Memorial service arrangements will be made privately by the family. Memorial contributions may be made to: Young-Williams Animal Center, young-williams.org
