Obituary for Joan M. Wall (McCarthy)

Joan Marie Wall (née McCarthy) passed away peacefully on December 24, 2023, at the age of 89. A lifelong Lexington resident, she was born in Boston in February 1934 to William T. McCarthy and Florence E. McCarthy (née Holian). Joan met the love of her life, Thomas A. Wall from Dromcollogher, County Limerick, Ireland, fittingly at a St. Patrick’s Day dance. They enjoyed raising a family together, traveling the world, and summering on Cape Cod. They happily celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this past May.

Joan was a graduate of Forsyth Dental School and worked as a dental hygienist for many years in Lexington. She went on to serve as the Office Manager of LexHAB, a rewarding career positively impacting the lives of her clients seeking affordable housing in her hometown. She was a gifted artist who enjoyed oil painting and was a member of the Lexington Arts & Crafts Society as well as the Sacred Heart Women’s Club.

Joan is survived by her faithful and beloved husband, Tom and was a loving mother to David P. Wall of Wellesley and his wife Deborah, Cathleen M. Wall (deceased), John T. Wall (deceased) and Maureen E. Levangie (née Wall) of Lexington and her husband Jack. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Mary Wall in Ireland and by her grandchildren James Wall, Julia Wall, Kaitlin Levangie and Colleen Levangie whom she loved dearly. Joan was also blessed with a “second sister” and friend, Jane Puffer and was a much beloved aunt of numerous nieces and nephews, as well as great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister Janet E. Puffer and brother William S. McCarthy.

A visitation will be held at St. Brigid Church in Lexington on January 3, 2024, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am and a Funeral Mass will immediately follow. Interment to conclude at Westview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Joan’s name to Catholic Charities of Boston.
