John “Jack” Joyce of Stoneham Massachusetts, formerly Lynn & Nahant, passed away peacefully on August 20th, 2022 after a courageous 4 year battle with cancer.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Jean Murphy Joyce. His children, Kristen Joyce McGovern (Mark), Heather Joyce Kelsey (James), Joseph Joyce, Scott Rynkowski (Casi), and Jill Rynkowski Doyle (Timothy). His grandchildren, Christopher and Elise McGovern, Olivia, Jonathan, and Isabelle Haouchine, Chase, Skylar, and Grayson Rynkowski, Emilia and Joseph Joyce Jr, and Cole Doyle. He is also survived by many loved nieces and nephews.

Jack is preceded in death by his parents, Josephine and Christopher Joyce. His brother Michael Joyce, and sisters, Joanne Joyce Tucker, and Lisa Joyce Connolly.

Jack had a very successful career for many years at General Electric and Ametek before retiring. He was a member of the Association of New England Football Officials for over 35 years and became President of the Association in 2014 when he received the William Stewart Award for Outstanding High School Official of the Year. He spent over 30 years in both the Eastern Football League and the Eastern Massachusetts Baseball Umpires Association. Jack was passionate about sports and fostered a similar love in his grandchildren. Both on and off of the field he made long-lasting friendships, Jack created a community wherever he went.

You could always count on Jack to be at his grandchildren's events, with his big smile, and maybe an occasional tear in his eye. He spread so much love; whether it was telling a silly joke, singing happy birthday both in person or over the phone, or cheering for them during sports games or theatrical performances. Jack celebrated all of his family’s best moments and accomplishments with immense love and pride. Family was the most important part of his life and he never failed to show it.

If you ever lost Jack in a crowd you could always find him chatting with someone, but could never tell whether they had just met or were long-time buddies. He made friends and has friends everywhere. Jack spread joy wherever he went and was loved by everyone he met. He will always be remembered by his kindness, strength, and sense of humor.

Jack loved his family with his whole heart, and they love him with all of theirs.

Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation in Saint Thomas Aquinas Church, Nahant Road, Nahant, on Thursday from 9-11 am. Followed by his funeral mass at 11 am. Burial is private.
