Obituary for John R. Gallagher, III

GALLAGHER, John R., III, son of John Robert, Jr and Margaret (Kelly) Gallagher, born May 17, 1927, of Mattapoisett and Falmouth, MA, and Wellington, FL, passed peacefully on May 27, 2019 at the age of 92.

John is the beloved husband of Katherine A. (Rikeman), loving father of Paul Gallagher of Concord, MA, Mary Gallagher Kuras of Grand Rapids, MI, and Heather Andersen and her husband Robert of Wilmington, MA. John is the cherished ‘Grandad’ of Benjamin and Emily Kuras, William Hird, and Caroline, Savannah, and John Robert Andersen. John is the dear brother of the late Gerard Gallagher of Medfield. Also survived by his devoted longtime caregivers and friends Alex DaFontoura and Javier Morales.

John was born and grew up in Newton, MA. He graduated from Boston College in 1951 and earned his law degree from Georgetown University Law School in 1955. He enlisted in the Army in 1945 and served his country as an Army Pilot during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He continued to work with the military in the Judge Advocate General, retiring from the military as a Lieutenant Colonel.

John built a successful business in Boston, MA, State Street Development Company, building beautiful housing for the elderly and low income properties for families in need. He believed that with great success came the responsibility to do great good. And he did. He gratefully shared his wealth, his knowledge, his time and his love.

John was a fierce family man. No matter the situation or the obstacle, he found a way to bring out the best outcome possible. When working with people, he was able to bring out the best in everyone around him so that each person succeeded in their own right and contributed to the larger goal. He ensured that everyone he loved was taken care of first, frequently sacrificing his own needs or happiness.

John was a devoted philanthropist who supported multiple charities and helped countless people. In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice, or an act of kindness to someone in need.
