Obituary for Joseph J. McSweeney

On Monday, March 15, 2021 at the age of 75 Joseph McSweeney of Waltham, loving husband and father of three, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family. Joseph worked for the Cambridge Police Department from 1969 until his retirement in 2005. He worked for many years as a patrolman ending his career commanding the Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Unit. Joseph is survived by his wife of 59 years, Susan, three children, James of Somerville and his wife Deborah, Diane (Smith) of Arlington and her husband Steven, Lynda (McSweeney-Giardina) of Waltham and her husband John as well as 7 grandchildren, Shannon, Robert, Ashley, Olivia, Ryan, Ava, and Ayden. Visiting Hours will be held on Thursday from 4-7PM in St. John's Church, 2254 Mass Ave., in North Cambridge. All attendees are required to wear face coverings, practice social distancing, kindly enter through the Mass Ave. doors, pay their respects and exit the side doors to allow other guests to enter. A limited number of guests will be allowed in the church at one time. His Funeral Mass will be held at St. John's on Friday at 11 am. Relatives and friends are invited. Burial in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge.
