Greene, Mary E. (Garten), age 96 years, of Dennis Port, MA, (formerly of Cambridge, MA), passed away peacefully on July 3rd in her favorite place in the world, her cherished home on Cape Cod.
This beloved, spunky, funny, devoted Boston sports fan and loving Mom to 10 (TEN!) children made her debut in Brookline, MA, on September 6th, 1925. She was the daughter of the late Margery (Boyce) (born in Cranford, Donegal, Ireland) and John Garten (born in Boston, MA)
Mickey lived life to its fullest. She loved spending time with family and friends, exercising, watching sports (you name it- she watched it!), and was still taking regular walks to our childhood beach. One of her favorite jobs was as a volunteer at the Dennis Senior Center. She had so much fun with her gang playing Bingo at St. Pius. She was a natural on the golf course, and when she couldn’t play any longer, she watched on TV. Oh – and Steve Harvey. She loved him. You had to know you could never call her during Family Feud.
She married the love of her life, Harry, and never looked back. Mickey was a devoted wife and citizen who participated in voting in all elections. She and Harry had worked together on John Kennedy’s campaign for Congress- he as John’s Publicity Chairman, and she helping out at fundraisers. Pat Kennedy enlisted her to join as a hostess at campaign events, and she would tell of how proud she was to wear the hostess sash presented to her by Pat.
Mickey was predeceased by her husband Henry (“Harry”) F. Greene, son Kevin Greene,
grandson David Greene, sister Margery Mullins (Joe), and brother John Garten (Helen).
She is survived by her beloved children and their spouses, Liz Saulnier (Ron), Harwich, MA; James Greene (Mary), Lexington, MA; the late Kevin Greene, Henry Greene (Kathy),
Somerville, MA; Ann Greene of Dennis, MA; Bernadette Marshall (Glenn), Bedford, MA;
Geraldine Lovely (Brad), Berkley, MA; Laura Carvello, Medford, MA; John Greene, Dennis
Port, MA, and Lance Greene (Britta), Arlington, MA.
She was the adored Grandmother of and is survived by Ronnie Saulnier, Scott Saulnier, James Michael Greene, Emily Greene, Nathanael Greene, Lauren Poor (Michael), Glenn Marshall (Jailyn), Daniel Marshall, Brendan Marshall (Vanessa), Anthony Carvello, Madison Carvello, Riley Greene and Aidan Greene.
“GiGi” was dearly loved by her great-grandchildren, Jacob Greene, Andrew and Alec Poor, and Glenn and Christian Marshall.
There is no doubt Mickey will be sorely missed by many, many friends. The family would like to thank Carol Malone, Irene Anderson, Ellen Young, Ellen Storlazzi, Chuck and Kim Averill, and Bob and Carol Reeves for being such special friends to their Mom.
