Obituary for Muriel W. Turk (Wellington)

TURK, Muriel W. (Wellington), 100, of Cambridge, passed peacefully on January 22, 2019. Born in Boston to the late George Wellington and Carrie (Bush). Beloved wife of the late General Turk, Jr. Cherished and Loving mother of Dr. Carolyn L. Turk of Cambridge. Dear sister of the late George Wellington Jr. and Jacqueline Wellington Bush. Proud aunt of Caryn Bush Baird of Gulfport, FL, the late S. Adam Bush of Atlanta, GA, and Wellington siblings Yuriko, Fumiko, George, Haruko, and Samuel of Oahu, HI. Also survived by numerous loving great nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Retired Grade 3 Teacher for the City of Boston, Muriel was an active community member throughout her adult life both in her native Boston and in the City of Cambridge where she has called home since 1949. She was a faithful congregant of The Church of St. Augustine and St. Martin where she served on many committees and as a Sunday School Teacher. Muriel was a member of the Aristo Club of Boston, an organization of black professional women who studied and taught black history and awarded scholarships to black children. In addition, she was a long time member of Cambridge’s Civic Unity Committee. The Committee’s primary focus during her tenure was to advise the City Manager on issues of race and class. She was also a proud member of the Girl Scouts. Visiting Hours will be from the Keefe Funeral Home, 2175 Mass Ave, NORTH CAMBRIDGE on Friday, February 1st from 4-7pm. A Funeral Service will be celebrated in The Church of St. Augustine & St. Martin, 29 - 31 Lenox Street, Boston, MA 02118 on Saturday, February 2nd at 10am. Burial will conclude in Cambridge Cemetery.
