Patricia “Patty” Whitehouse-Nevins, 76, passed away on August 12, 2023, in Arlington, Massachusetts, after a long, courageous battle with dementia. She is survived by her sister Roberta Burns of Natick, nephew Timothy Burns and wife Kathy of Dedham, and nephew Steven Burns and wife Michele of Framingham. She was the loving mother of Marshall Whitehouse Nevins and mother-in-law of Wynne Dillon Nevins of New York, and recent grandmother to Patricia Berrena Nevins. Her infectious smile will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Born in Arlington to the late Howard N. and Muriel A. (Bergkuist) Whitehouse, Patty loved her parents incredibly, and her devotion to her father during his later years served as an inspiration to many. Patty graduated from Arlington High School in 1965 and Springfield College in 1969. She earned a master’s degree in education from Boston University in 1970 and then began a 40-year career as an elementary school teacher in Lexington, most fondly at Harrington School. Patty was a loyal colleague and dedicated teacher; she loved children and believed firmly in the importance of a strong foundation in reading, writing, and arithmetic.
Above all else, Patty was most committed to her son, Marshall. Her encouragement was as endless as his activities were countless, all made possible by her remarkable sacrifice and selflessness. She loved the mission of Belmont Hill School and was eternally grateful that Marshall was able to attend. Patty and Marshall’s most precious time together was every August at her cherished Good Harbor Beach in Gloucester. Marshall was the joy of her life, and he is as thankful for her as she was for him.
Marshall offers his most sincere gratitude to the many doctors, nurses, aides, and companions who cared for his beloved mother for so many years. Special recognition is owed to Dr. Fong, Cheryl, Suzanne, Joanie, Zu, Judy, John, and Katie. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 21, 2023, at 11:30am at Keefe Funeral Home in Arlington. Visitation will occur prior to the service, beginning at 10:30am. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Patty’s name to Belmont Hill School in Belmont, MA.
