Obituary for Paul B. Cousineau

On April 30th, Paul transitioned into the next phase of his journey, enveloped by the loving energy of his life-partner, Scott Leatherman and his chosen family, Patricia Vesey-McGrew and James McGrew. Born in 1946, a son of the late Joseph Emile Cousineau and Annette (Berard) Cousineau, Paul lived in Swansea, MA until his early twenties when he moved to the Boston/Cambridge area where he resided until his death at the age of seventy-three.

The hallmark of his life was his devotion to, and caring for, the disabled, the chronically infirm, and the acutely ill. Paul began his career as a nursing assistant at St. John of God Hospital in Brighton, MA and for the next forty plus years worked as a nurse at Youville Hospital in Cambridge. At the age of seventy, Paul retired his position as nurse practitioner at what had become Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. He left a legacy of committed, compassionate, intelligent, and loving nursing care.

A deeply spiritual man, Paul was a student and practitioner of Roman and Eastern Catholicism, Mahayana and Zen Buddhism, and Jungian psychological studies. He was, at heart, a monastic and a mystic. This rich inner life was nurtured daily by his love of music.

Paul leaves behind his devoted life-partner, Scott Leatherman, a nephew, David Cousineau and his wife, Kayleigh, their children, Lydia, and David; sister-in-law, Patricia Cousineau; and chosen family, Carole Ann Spear, Patricia Vesey-McGrew, James McGrew and their children, spouses, and grandchildren; the Gerasev family. He was pre-deceased by his brother, Norbert Emile Cousineau.
