Obituary for Paul E. Lyons

LYONS, Paul E. Age 85, of Waltham, formerly of Belmont, passed away suddenly on June 19, 2022. Beloved husband of Moira (Feeley) Lyons for 58 years. Loving father of Kathleen Guden and her husband Jay of Belmont, Michael Lyons of Andover, Patricia Brody and her husband Jeff of Belmont, Sheila Blomquist and her husband Scott of Westwood, and Kevin Lyons and his wife Chris Ann of Arlington. Cherished Grampie of Katie, Kevin and David Guden; Ben, Matt and Sarah Brody; Brian, Hannah, Kendall and Sean Blomquist; Caleigh and Mackenzie Lyons. Son of the late Joseph and Catherine (McKeon) Lyons. Survived by his sisters-in-law Eleanor Feeley, Eileen Feeley, Brenda Lipizzi, and friend Joyce Finerty. Brother-in-law of the late Edward Feeley, Jr., Kevin Feeley, Michael Lipizzi and Sheila Feeley. Also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and devoted friends. Paul was born on July 14, 1936 in Boston, MA. He graduated from Cambridge High and Latin School in 1954. He went on to Boston College where he played varsity basketball and in 1958 led the first BC team ever to qualify for the NCAA tournament. He earned his B.S. in Mathematics from BC and M. Ed. from Boston University. For 40 years Paul worked as a teacher, administrator, and math coordinator for the City of Cambridge. He was a Mathematics professor at Northeastern University for 25 years. In addition, he coached basketball for over 60 years, 25 at Belmont High as the varsity boys’ basketball coach, capturing the 1993 state championship, earning Boston Globe Coach of the Year and achieving over 400 wins. Paul founded the Belmont Youth Basketball Association, along with a group of dedicated parents. He devoted his life to helping young people reach their potential through education and athletics. Paul treasured family time spent camping and hiking in the White Mountains, swimming at Hampton Beach, attending his grandchildren’s many school and athletic events, and dining out with his dear lifelong friends.

Visiting Hours will be held at the Keefe Funeral Home, 5 Chestnut Street, Arlington, on Thursday June 23rd from 4-7pm. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday June 24th at 11:30am at St. Camillus Church, 1185 Concord Turnpike, Arlington. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Burial will conclude at Highland Meadow Cemetery in Belmont.
