Obituary for Sina Schoening Ball

Sina Schoening Ball passed away on Tuesday, February 23 at the age of 16. Sina was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on December 22, 2004. She died by suicide after struggling with depression. Sina was a sophomore at Cambridge Rindge & Latin School, and previously attended NuVu Studio and Putnam Avenue Upper School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Mayer Magnet School in Chicago, Illinois.

Sina possessed a brilliant mind coupled with a creativity and sincere compassion that made an indelible impression on so many. She enriched the lives of her classmates, friends, and teachers in large and small ways, with her kindness, empathy, and patience. Sina was a patient mentor, helping peers in school. She was an intern at NuVu’s summer camps for high school students in 2018 and 2019, and interned at Comcast developing software to help the elderly live independently. Sina’s passion for technology was imprinted on her projects and computer programs, created both at NuVu and independently, and brought aid, joy, and amazement to her friends, mentors, and her family. Her prolific art—paintings, sketches, and photography—reflected her intelligence, her gift for satire, and her signature wit.

Sina is survived by her loving parents Julie Schoening and Christopher Ball, grandmother JoAnn Ball, grandfather Roger Schoening, aunts and uncles Roger Schoening, Kathleen Landadio, Bryan Landadio, David Ball, and Katherine Milgram, and cousins Bryan Landadio, Jr. and Kevin Landadio. Sina was preceded in death by her grandmother Carol Schoening and her grandfather Dr. Richard Ball.

A private funeral will be held for Sina on Friday, March 5, 2021.
