Obituary for Teresa Lionetta
Leticia Teresa Lionetta, known to most as Auntie Teresa, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 6th. She was 88 years of age.
Born and raised in Arlington, Teresa was the youngest of six children born to the late Anthony and Leticia Lionetta. Teresa was raised in Arlington with her five siblings, Angelina, William, John, Pasquale (Pat), and Joseph. She attended St. Agnes Elementary School in her early years, and then went on to graduate from Arlington High School.
A lifelong Arlington resident, Teresa was very involved in her local community. Much of her younger days were spent working at Lionetta’s Market, the family store that was a great source of pride for Teresa. She would smile from ear to ear each time she warmly spoke of her adventures at the market with her siblings. She also enjoyed tending to the family gardens out behind the family home, which she lived in for most of her life.
Teresa’s passion for gardening and flower arranging was only surpassed by her love of sports. She could often be seen (or more accurately, be heard) watching her beloved Boston sports teams with her long time companion Marley. The Boston Bruins always held a special place in her heart, as she was a long time season ticket holder who enjoyed many trips into the old Boston Garden with her family.
Eventually Teresa found her work home at Playtime, a local arts and crafts store. She was happily employed there for many years. There she met several wonderful colleagues and customers, many of whom would fast become her friends.
A devoted parishioner of St. Agnes Church, Teresa relied heavily on her faith throughout her life. She spent many hours finding comfort in prayer.
Children were always the apple of Teresa’s eye. Although she had no children of her own, she was the caretaker of many adults and children alike. Teresa unselfishly helped her beloved niece Liz to raise her boys Michael and Danny as if they were her own. They lived under her roof, and she spent many a day yelling at the boys and their friends for hitting the house with whiffle balls or for making noise upstairs. She always had her famous chicken cutlets or meatballs on hand to feed the boys. In more recent years, she showered Michael and Danny’s wives and children with her love. She adored Carolyn, Susan, Nora, Justin and Fiona with all of her heart, and to say the feeling was mutual would truly be an understatement.
Auntie Teresa passed away the same day as her beloved brother Joe, which was truly fitting after the way they fiercely protected one another in life. Teresa was blessed to share her life with her brother Joseph Lionetta and his wife Anna (Belmonte) of Arlington, Angelina Tirabassi and her husband Albert of Watertown, Anthony and his wife Rose of Arlington, William and his wife Angelina of Yarmouth, and the Pasquale and his wife Rose of Arlington. She is survived by her devoted nephews Michael Plamondon and his wife Carolyn of Arlington and Daniel Plamondon and his wife Susan of Tewksbury. Also survived by many additional loving nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial doantions may be made in Teresa's memory to the Fidelity House, 25 Medford Street, Arlington, MA 02474.
