Thomas L. Miller

Devoted Husband, Father, And Grandfather

Thomas L. Miller passed away on Wednesday, January 12th, 2022, while battling cancer. He was 74.

Born in Kansas to William H. and Mary A. Miller, he was preceded in death by his father, mother, and sister Charlotte Sue.

Surviving him in addition to his loving wife, Rebecca, are their two children, Christina and William, and two grandsons.

Raised in Topeka and Towanda, Kansas, Tom graduated from Yale University in 1971 where he majored in both Electrical Engineering and Mathematics with a Bachelor of Science degree. His focus in school was on the then-new field of Computers, the programming of which became his career. Through almost 50 years he worked in a variety of fields as computers were integrated into the modern world. These included aerospace, medical devices, and construction where he designed flight simulators, built and fixed life-saving machines, and wrote software to automate and streamline constructing homes.

Tom spent the first part of his career living in Bethesda, Maryland, but later moved to the Colorado mountains where he met his wife and raised their family. In his retirement he chose to live in New England to allow him to spend time with his grandchildren.

While computers were a hobby in addition to a profession for him, Tom was a man with many talents and interests including woodworking and science fiction. He had a particular passion for dogs and taught dog training classes in his spare time. In partnership with his canine friends, he won several obedience competitions. A devotee of the outdoors, and mountains in particular, Tom hiked part of the Appalachian Trail. Later, in Colorado, he took pride in having hiked the entirety of the 250-plus miles of trails in the local open space park system, most with a canine companion.

His family is memorializing him in both New England, and the Colorado mountains at a later date. Contributions in his memory can be made to a local animal shelter, open space or conservation group, or cancer foundation.
