Obituary for W. Robin Upton

UPTON, W. Robin Age 91, of Cambridge, MA, October 6, 2022. Devoted husband of the late Joanne Upton. Loving father of Andrew and his wife, Alison Mitchell of Cambridge, MA, and Susan and her husband, Peter Buttenwieser of New York, NY. Loving grandfather of Zachary, Annabelle, Charlotte, Katherine, and Sophie. Robin was born in Montreal, Canada, where he was raised by his mother after his father's death when Robin was 11 years old. At 14, he signed a youth contract with an affiliate of the Chicago Blackhawks hockey team. At 16, he joined the Merchant Marine and at 18, he volunteered to join the Royal Canadian Air Force. After his military service, he attended the University of Maine where he was a member of the Varsity Tennis and Varsity Ski teams. A broken leg during a college national championship qualifying ski race was repaired with three steel screws that were known to set off airport metal detectors for the next 30 years. Robin moved to Cambridge to attend MIT Business School and had a career as the Chief Financial Officer of a university campus planning company; the architectural firm Moishe Safdie and Associates; and Vesti, an international art investment firm. During his business career he lived and worked in more than 25 countries. A self-taught cook, he frequently entertained relatives and friends with dinner parties featuring food that he prepared. In his retirement, Robin enjoyed travel with his wife, Joanne, reading, taking classes at the Harvard Institute for Learning in Retirement and offering his political, social, and cultural opinions to all who were fortunate enough to listen. Burial will be private, and a Memorial Service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the University of Maine Foundation: https://umainefoundation.org/
