Obituary for William R. MacDougall

William MacDougall of Reading, MA, formerly of Medford, MA, passed away on January 28, 2023, at the age of 88. Son of Helen (Foley) and Ronald MacDougall. Beloved husband of 60 years of Margaret (Friel) of Reading and devoted father of Laurie of Reading and Denis of Medford. Son-in-law of Dennis and Kathleen Friel and brother-in-law of the late John Friel.

Bill was a proud graduate of Boston Latin School and the Boston College School of Education. He attended St. John’s Seminary and earned a master’s degree in education at Boston State College. He spent more than 35 years as a guidance counselor for the Boston Public Schools, primarily at the Washington Irving Middle School.

Bill was an active member of his church and community. He served as a church lector, a Scoutmaster, and the president of Phi Delta Kappa educational fraternity, BC chapter, to name just a few activities. Following his retirement, he spent 20 years as a volunteer at the Winchester Hospital. He and Peg enjoyed many wonderful summers at their retirement home in Moultonborough, NH.

Bill loved travel, trivia, Broadway musicals, and reading history books. He and Peg took more than 25 cruises during retirement, including a few memorable transatlantic voyages with their children. He particularly enjoyed when his interests overlapped, such as shipboard trivia or excursions to Normandy and Ypres. He was a faithful viewer of Jeopardy! Finally, he loved his “grandcats” Cassie and Miranda and delighted in their antics.
