Joseph Camille Cormier, of Arlington, MA, passed away at the age of 102 on Friday, September 7, 2018.
Cam was raised in Fitchburg, MA, one of a very large blended family, having brothers, sisters, half-brothers, half-sisters, stepbrothers and stepsisters. Growing up in the Fitchburg neighborhood of Cleghorn, French was the language of the household and his only language until entering school. This background was to be a bonus in his life to come, when he met is bride-to-be.

Cam joined the war effort, enlisting in the U.S. Army in August, 1943. Following AAA Officer Candidate and Height Finder School, he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant. Cam’s unit was Battery A 948th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion, which engaged in combat in the Ryukus Campaign on Ie Shima in late 1945. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, American Service Medal and the WWII Victory Medal.

After the war, Cam returned to a rented a room in Derry, NH. Thus began the love affair that was the source of his smile throughout the many years to follow. He had a car. She needed a ride. Rosaline, an Army nurse, needed to pick up a post-discharge Army stipend. One ride began a lifetime journey, one which continues to inspire admiration in all who have been fortunate enough to have known it.

Cam and Rosaline moved to Arlington with their two young daughters in 1959, creating a home that supported and nurtured both them and their children. Playing games was a constant in the evenings in Arlington, and those game-playing years later served Cam well. Dominoes was his forte, but checkers, Bingo, Rack-O, SkipBo and other card games come in as close seconds, all.

Cam’s later years showed an indomitable will to accept life as it was and smile beyond all expectations. He was one determined-to-be happy man. All who have met him express privilege to have known him, from relatives to neighbors to caregivers to just plain friends.

Cam was predeceased by the love of his life, Rosaline, after 66 years of marriage. He is survived by his two loving daughters, Dianne Cormier of Cambridge and Susan Scangas, along with her husband Charlie of Gloucester and his grandson Johnathan Scangas and wife Angie of Norway, ME. He was also survived by his devoted caregiver and friend of many years, Mary Beth Marsden of Plaistow, NH, and by many loving godchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Cam's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, alz.org (225 N. Michigan Avenue FL-17, Chicago, IL 60601.

Cam will be missed.
