LILLIAN KENNEDY

How does one measure a lifetime? Lillian Kennedy lived 93 years and although 93 years is a long time how should one measure it. You could measure Lilly’s life by her love for family. I remember she always stayed over Christmas Eve and made us breakfast the next morning so my parents could stay up late playing Santa’s helpers. You could measure Lilly’s life by her work at the John Hancock. She helped pave the way for the American working woman and proudly served as executive secretary for one of our founding Fathers direct descendants, John Quincy Adams. You could certainly measure her life in her love for others. Her devotion and daily walks to visit her ailing sister Rose is testimony to that. Still, the more I tried to find a way to measure what 93 years really means the more questions I found myself asking. In the end I think it’s the questions that might actually be the answer.

How many presidents does one see in 93 years?
How many innovations does one witness?
How many cookies did she bake?
How many pairs of shoes did she buy?
How many songs did Lilly dance to?
How many times do you think that she tried to catch a snowflake on her tongue?
How many gifts did she give?
How many babies did she comfort?
How many smiles did she cause?
And how many lives has her life touched?

You can measure a life in wealth and you can measure a life in accomplishments and you can certainly measure a life in the number of years you live. But isn’t it grand to pause and imagine the incalculable amount of moments that make up a life. A life like Lillian’s. Lillian Kennedy didn’t live 93 years she lived a hundred thousand kisses and a million hugs.
We love you Lil, Scotty
