Red Pants

I'm the wine/beer buyer at the Broadway Marketplace, just around the corner from where Joe and Val were living. I got to know them both through their regular visits and knew them through Val's battle with liver cancer and admired them both for their strength and resolve to get through what must have been a horrible experience. I came to the services to honor not just Joe's incredible sense of humor and genuineness, but also to honor the love that was so obvious between the two of them. Their bond and love for each other was so clearly present and it is so rare to see it with married people these days. I knew that Joe had a great sense of humor, but I saw it in action one afternoon as I walked through Harvard Square and observed a guy who looked very much like Joe, but he was wearing a very bright red pair of pants, something that the Joe that I knew would not wear. I walked along looking him up and down from a distance, we were both walking in the direction of his home and my store, so I only saw him from the back. Normally, if it had been Joe I would have said hello and we would have chatted, but I was convinced that it couldn't be Joe. Well, much later, Val and Joe came into the store and I mentioned the expereince to have them both start laughing, confirming that it had been Joe after all. We had such a good laugh over it. So, to honor Joe's memory I am going to go out and buy a pair of bright red pants and I'm going to wear them and remember Joe and Val, and their love for each other.
