Gallagher, David, of Watertown, MA died on Sunday July 24th at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He had been ill with leukemia for a year and half. David was born on April 3, 1962 in Lowell, MA. He was the son of the late Miriam A. Gallagher and Walter C. Gallagher. David was the Chief of Conservation at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, MA. Previously he worked for Webb Architectural Preservation where he specialized in the preservation of 18th and early 19th century homes and timber framed barns. After 2-years as sole proprietor of Gallagher Historical Restoration, he joined Mount Auburn Cemetery as Preservation Craftsman in 2001. David was a 2002 Quinque Fellow, studying stone conservation practices in Scotland. David studied with Tim Meek of Scotland, a noted practitioner in use of traditional lime mortars, and Nick Micros, a sculptor, preservation mason and a 2006 Guggenheim Fellow. He practiced preservation craftsmanship for more than 20 years, and for 14 years focused on the conservation of stone monuments and sculpture. He was treasurer of the Northeast Chapter of The Society of Preservation Technology, and a member of the Boston Society of Architects Historic Resources Committee. David was a much loved and loyal friend, brother and nephew. He loved working with his hands, traveling, swimming in Kezar Lake and spending time with friends and family. He enjoyed watching old movies and catching Patriots games with his sister's family, as well as relaxing by watching Sunday afternoon golf on TV. He was best known for his dry and sometimes mordant wit, which he continued to display up to his very last days. David graduated from Lowell High School in 1980 and from St. Michael's College in Winooski, VT in 1984 with a B.A. in Business Administration. He also graduated from the Preservation Carpentry Program at North Bennet Street School in Boston. David leaves his brother and sister-in-law Walter and Karen Gallagher of Lowell, MA his sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Michael Kilbride of Pelham, NH, his brother Michael Gallagher of Northboro, MA and his sister and brother-in-law Deborah Gallagher and Peter Traversy of Cambridge, MA. He also leaves his uncle and aunt Judy and David O'Heir of North Hampton, NH and his aunt Katherine Van Greenby of Lowell, MA. He leaves 8 nieces and nephews, 2 grandnephews and many loyal and loving friends, and children of friends to whom he was a favorite "uncle." Visiting hours Thursday July 28th from 4 to 8 PM at the Keefe Funeral Home, 2175 Massachusetts Ave., North Cambridge. A funeral service will be held at Story Chapel, Mt. Auburn Cemetery, 580 Mt. Auburn St. Cambridge, Friday July 29th at 11 AM. Interment will be private. It has been requested that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made in David’s name to the Friends of Mt. Auburn Cemetery, 580 Mt. Auburn St. Cambridge, MA 02138.
