Silvia Dominguez was the day-care provider for our daughter Kathy from 1975 to about 1980, and we continued to see her and her family frequently until we moved away from Massachusetts in 1985. “Tia”, as she was known to the children in her care, was an extraordinary person and we were very fortunate to have her as a part of our lives. She seemed to be happiest when surrounded by children, and her generous, loving nature made us very comfortable leaving our baby in her care. In the course of her years at Tia’s house, Kathy came to regard Ester, “little” Silvia, Carmen, and Lula as her siblings; Carlos and the Dominguez daughters all participated in the care of the visiting children, and Kathy thrived in this loving and stimulating environment. The day-care children were all learning to speak in both Spanish and English (except Jean-Paul, the child who is shown in the photo; he was learning to speak in Spanish, English, and Hopi), but somehow they usually knew which words to use with which person. Kathy’s birthday parties always included the Dominguez family, and even after Kathy started school, she continued to visit the Dominguez house as often as she could, ostensibly to help out. Tia somehow managed to maintain her dignity, humanity, and capacity for love despite the difficulties and tragedies in her life, and all those she touched are the richer for her presence.
