Costas D.  Varmazis
Costas D. Varmazis of Chelmsford, MA, died on June 2, 2016. He was born on April 10, 1942, in Moschopotamos, Pieria, Greece, and grew up in Katerini, Greece. He earned a degree in Physics from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, and served as an officer in the Greek Army. He earned his Ph.D. in Engineering Science from Columbia University in 1974. Costas married Katina Galatsianos of York, PA, in 1974. They have a son, Dimitri, and daughter, Maria. Highlights of his career include being a founding faculty member and tenured Professor of Physics at the University of Crete in Iraklion, Greece; and a more than 25-year career in semiconductor engineering at M/A-COM and Tyco Electronics, in Lowell, MA, where he was Senior Principal Engineer and Distinguished Fellow of Technology. He was awarded numerous patents, and in 2007 was a recipient of the Tyco Electronics Impact Innovation Award and Lifetime Achievement Award. He is survived by his wife, Catherine (Katina) Galatsianos Varmazis; son Dimitri; daughter Maria and son-in-law Eric Bergeron; and his siblings Nikos Varmazis, Ioannis Varmazis, Maria Karabidi, Eleni Varmazi, and Agathi Modiati, all of Greece. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 6th, at the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, 1160 Mammoth Road, Dracut, MA. Interment at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, MA. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church in Dracut, MA 01826. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend.
