Kathy memorial

It is not possible to fully recall a lifetime with Kathy in 5 minutes. But I can share with you a few memories. Kathy was a great traveler. Before we met she had already been to Ireland and India during her summer breaks while she was a teacher in the Boston schools. A couple of years after we met, she let me come with her for three weeks of a Safari in Kenya via an open-back truck and in tents at night. Later we went together by car to Mexico on our honeymoon, to Ireland, and on many other adventures. When traveling, she never wanted to miss a thing, which made for full but exhausting journeys. When we started our family in 1987, she quit her job as a computer programmer to be with our two boys during their childhood years. She gave to them fully and continuously. Today, as we celebrate her life, I remember “last things:” • Our last foreign trip to England and Scotland—when we were in London at the time of the subway and bus bombings in 2005 • The last time she traveled by herself to attend a Parkinson’s disease conference in Washington, DC, • The last time we went on a car trip in the U.S. with Barbara to the Outer Banks of North Carolina—and stopped on the way back with Barbara and Martin in Pennsylvania, • The last time she drove by herself to try to find a hike in Sudbury, • The last bike trip we had together somewhere in Central Massachusetts. I had, I think, a distant foreshadowing of today. In the first days of 1980 when I decided to ask Kathy to marry me, I took her to a small mountain in the area north of San Francisco, planning to ask her when we got to the top. However, after we had gone quite a ways, Kathy got tired and wanted to turn around. So we stopped and I asked her to marry me at a nice overlook not quite all the way up the mountain. Kathy, thank you for saying yes to me then, and since then. Thank you for coming with me as far as you could. Go with my love in peace. --Dale
