Obituary

Obituary for Nirmal C. Daniere (Chawla)

Nirmal Chawla Daniere was born on April 23rd, 1930 in Lahore, Pakistan into a large Sikh family. She was the third child (of six) born to Piari and Gopal Singh Chawla. Her nickname within her family was 'Baby' for her entire life. Nirmal had a very remarkable life including escaping with her family from Lahore to New Delhi, India at the age of seventeen during the Partition of India and Pakistan following independence from Britain, working for All-India Radio as a classical music announcer, traveling to Germany and, eventually, Cambridge, Massachusetts in the 1950s, attending graduate school at Radcliffe, working for WBCN, WBUR and WCRB as a classical DJ, marrying (and eventually divorcing from) Andre Daniere and having three daughters, becoming a very successful real estate broker and, finally, traveling around the world on many different and wonderful occasions. Nirmal was an extremely hard working and intelligent woman with a kooky sense of humor and a love of life and adventure. She was inspiration in many ways to her daughters as well as a very good friend to a wide variety of people. Her favorite things included fresh fruit, yellow roses and BMWs.

Nirmal is survived by her three daughters, Amrita, Jyoti and Asha as well as her six grandchildren, Simran and Mohan Fitzgerald, Isabelle and Sophia Fenn, and Henry and Margaux Amer. She will be greatly missed.
