MONAHAN, Daniel Leo, “D. Leo”, longtime Boston sports columnist and hockey expert, died March 27, 2013. He was 86 years old. Monahan, a native of South Boston, worked 38 years for the Hearst newspapers – Daily Record, Record-American, Herald-American—and served as special Boston correspondent for Sports Illustrated from 1960-1990. He also furnished a weekly column for the St. Louis-based Sporting News for 15 years. He won the Hearst National Writing Contest three times.
In 1986, Monahan was enshrined in hockey’s Hall of Fame, one of the rare Americans so honored at the time. He covered the NHL and especially the Boston Bruins from 1948 to 1990. Monahan co-authored with the late Lynn Patrick an instructional hockey book in 1958 that was “stolen” by the Russians.
A Belmont resident, Monahan was the beloved husband of the late Stella (Frechette). Loving father of Rita Monahan-Earley and her husband Charles of Arlington, Mary Reed and her husband Tommie of Texas, Gail Monahan of Belmont, and the late Stella Monahan LeDoux. Beloved grandfather of Kathleen and C. Daniel Leo Earley, and Daniel and Mary Reed. Also survived by his five great grandsons, and many nieces and nephews. Brother of the late Bob Monahan.
