Tom Mulvoy
D. Leo Monahan was one of a cadre of sports fans-turned-sportswriters who during the last half of the 20th century made the city of Boston a lively place with their reporting on the people who played the games that fans were interested in. He and his brother Bob, with whom I worked, were always ready to help a young journalist find the way. In fact, in 1964, when D. Leo was a correspondent for Sports Illustrated in Boston, he was the person who recommended my brother Mark for a rookie baseball writer's job at SI. My brother closed his 34-year career at SI as the managing editor for his last dozen years. D. Leo got him off the mark. May he rest in peace.
